Custom hotkeys or buttons?

Would it be possible to add the capability to have the users add a couple of hot keys for functions they use often?
For example, I often find myself needing to insert a MathType Equation, so I have to got to Insert -> object -> select MathType Equation.
Could I just have a button that I can "record" those actions into. That would really handy for when I'm taking notes. I know that some Microsoft applications have this "record macro" feature.
Also, I'm always inserting 2 column tables (say 10 rows). It would be nice if when adding these buttons that hot key combinations could be assigned to them (Ctrl-Alt-1, Ctrl-alt-2...) Maybe have a limit of 5 custom buttons?
